26% of office jobs and 20% of customer service jobs are at riskThe above economic statistics, published by Goldman Sachs, shook the world. In a blunt forecast, the report lists entire industries where AI could eliminate up to 300 million jobs worldwide. We identified students in college or university-level courses as the major stakeholders of these developments. Predictions suggest that by the time they graduate, most young people will be unemployed in the field for which they majored: their dream jobs will cease to exist.
-McKinsey
In this upheaval of Artificial Intelligence, not all jobs are as vulnerable as others. Similarly, in an interesting research done, the jobs which are most likely to be replaced are the ones which are traditionally considered "boring" ", repetitive", and with little or no creative value. Traditional desk jobs and clerical jobs can be seen as the first stage of replacement (say accountants, cashiers, clerks, departmental heads, survey analysts), requiring little to no creative value.
See image below: graphical representation.
Moving forward, how can an established major or an administrator differentiate themselves and make themself stand out in the competitive AI-driven job market? One must follow what I call the "SPICE" Formula- a set of realistic guidelines, to survive the AI chaos.
SPICE FORMULA
(for established workers)
Skills:
The Easiest way humans have adapted to a new set of challenges, from ancient times, is by differentiating themselves. Ancient Hunters beat wild animals by adapting (that's one of the causes for human motor skills). The same adaptability is due for pay when a new "apex" predator, artificial intelligence, has emerged. Employees must do things that computerised intelligence could never do. They must develop skills so impactful and so unshakeable that Artificial Intelligence can not replace them in the coming years. For example, teaching is a job vulnerable to AI (with the rise of Artificial Intelligence in helping with homework), which can develop skills of empathy, active learning techniques. and building an emotional connection with their students, a skill that "AI" can not imitate. Similarly, an accountant should simultaneously develop skills of deep analysis and management of a company's financial records, so as to not get replaced shortly. A detailed skill set suggestion for the most vulnerable jobs is given in this Google document (credit- blog owner, copy and paste the link in any browser of choice):https://docs.google.com/document/d/e/2PACX-1vR5yHc1FiOravrJfEDhKUnkxeBya9M5DCeMABGnddCBnOlefN23afKKrL8aQH1QnbkpddPRVYKCZdwF/pub
Practice:
Practice involves perfecting skills. Even an Advanced AI Mystral or OpenAI, models and trains its data to perfection. To maintain the status quo, an individual must perfect their skill, add a hint of human authenticity and empathy, and focus on building relations and productive skills.Innovation:
An individual can never be subject to replacement (and this is a universal, eternal law), as long as an individual can develop problem-solving and innovative skills, AI may never replace them. AI, in economic terms, is a means to an end, a tool for perfection and problem solving. Fields like cancer research, human behaviour or psychology, and laws of STEM or astrology, have not been fully discovered yet. Solving problems, even on a smaller scale, using AI, instead of resisting it, is a powerful method to stay on mark, in the modern rise of Artificial Intelligence.Creativity:
Artificial Intelligence derives its knowledge from training data and the creativity of human sources of information or past trends. AI is a subset of humans, not an overlord. No amount of AI intelligence, shortly, can deride and replace human emotions or skills of kindness or empathy. The key to beating Artificial intelligence and standing out in the job market revolves around employing creative ways to solve problems, as well as using creative, productive ideas to benefit the firm(s). Only a human can understand another being, and for that reason, no one is better than humans themselves to solve our problems.“Computers are incredibly fast, accurate, and stupid. Human beings are incredibly slow, inaccurate, and brilliant. Together they are powerful beyond imagination.”
— Albert Einstein
"E" signifies evolution and the human ability to grow and learn from one's mistake, thereby not only fulfilling professional or career related goals, but also the life-long goals of fulfilment, evolution and striving to be better- an attitude not possible to be mimicked, by computers, and differentiating "SPICE" users from the rest of the job market.
JOBS NOT AFFECTED BY ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)
Suppose you are someone looking for a future-proof or prospective degree. In that case, this section is dedicated to predicting, via available economic data, the probability of future-proof professions, in no particular order. The key to this economic crisis, which the world seems to stand on, or no, any other economic crisis in the world, rounds back to "Behavioural Economics" and its study, and the impact of "Psychology" as a whole, and how it shapes our economic actions. The same rule can be applied in the case of this imminent crisis. No matter how advanced AI may become, some jobs are protected, not only because of the applied "SPICE" method, but also because of "human sentiments." Common jobs that have the least probability of AI replacement are:
Lawyers & Doctors
The jobs of Lawyers and Doctors are highly analytical, risky and creative in nature. In case of lawyers: Legal decisions are not made in cold logic alone (like the ones modern Artificial Intelligence provides). Ethics, empathy, and strategy play major roles, especially in criminal defence, civil rights, and high-stakes corporate litigation. No matter how perfect and accurate Artificial Intelligence might become with precedents, quoting cases, submitting documents, during high-risk cases, a CEO or an executive manager would prefer a human lawyer over an Artificial one, during a multi-billion security fraud case, as one wrong step is the thin line between imprisonment and freedom. This level of intellectual trust can only be developed between humans.
In case of doctors, when the same situation is posed, but the thin line of difference is life or death, no matter how professionally built or statistically approved an AI model may be, a human may feel reluctant to let an unknown, unresponsive robot respond to operate on their body. Multiple research papers and surveys posit that human doctors are preferred.
Therapist
Inevitably, many people stand to lose their jobs to artificial intelligence along with the increase of many economic hardships and changes in the standards of living, and mental health is for sure to go on decline. Bots like ChatGPT, Meta, and TherapyAI can help deal with your emotions or stress, but it is only the first step in therapy. Even these chatbots, on their own, suggest hiring a professional. Many reports have dubbed AI chatbots as unreliable and "robotic" in their answers. These chatbots do not provide genuine opinions, but are biased towards the user. This, along with the risk of privacy leaks and data leaks, has seen many shift to professional therapists, the market for it growing exponentially in the past years. With the help of these chatbots, orthodox ideologists have opened up, and have taken the first step in entering the therapy market, and trying to communicate further with a real empathetic human, who they can hear, see and observe. With the upward trend and unfortunate rise of crisis, now is the best time ever to pursue a psychology degree.
Government: Politician or Diplomat.
No matter the development in technology, the government will always play a part in regulating the structure as a whole. Therefore, Artificial Intelligence and its use in politics are a precarious topic. Humans strive for freedom and political rights. "Democracy" was made to serve and represent the general public, not the general "robots." It is pure disbelief, in my opinion, that we would see an Artificial Intelligence leader or politician, even in the next century. Yes, AI shall and can help in political ideologies or in politics, but its use will be highly regulated and highly technical in a sense. As for diplomats, the same logic as above persists. A sudden shift in political ideology is unlikely, and conservatives would never allow a robot or a bot to be a diplomat, at least for the initial years. (though this may be subject to adaptation and development. But much later in time. Government entities are primarily made up of diplomats, who again are humans, and only a human can best decode, strike and negotiate deals with another human, and not a robotic model trained to imitate human charisma.
Leadership Roles: Founders & Economists.
Founders and Economists are the cornerstone of even Artificial Intelligence. It is tech startups and FinTech analysts who build AI models to simplify lives. Problem-solving skills, estimated by researchers, will take another century for AI models to fully comprehend. Till that time, the jobs of founders and economists, despite the incumbent risk, are more secure than ever. The rise of AI is to benefit entrepreneurs, founders more. In that regard, I would like to extend my claim to say that all leadership positions that require creative knowledge and hard work can not be filled quickly. On the other hand, economists, as well, are irreplaceable. Economists can and do actively suggest multiple firms and businesses, who surely prefer a recognised P.H.D holder over an Artificial Intelligence bot. Analysing years of past-market trends, and "pattern recognition", along with cognitive skills, are impossible to imitate, if not authentic. These leadership roles adhere to the "Skills and Innovation" part of the SPICE formula.
AI Developers / Engineers.
Neither man nor machine can replace its creator.
- Tapan Ghosh
This statement applies to AI developers as well. The creators of Artificial Intelligence can never be replaced by it. An Individual who can develop AI models, offer firms unique skill sets, and help AI and guide it in a productive sense will not only be a standout in the job market but also catch a high CTC package, with or without a degree. While it may be true, Artificial Intelligence is being trained to code and make its own "copies", the process will still require a high level of human regulation and guidance. Self-sufficient development processes will take quite a long time to develop. In a world being reshaped by artificial intelligence, those who create it will continue to be the most valuable minds in the economy. Instead of resisting change and the AI revolution, it is better if one joins and embrace it. No time is better than now to pursue a degree in FinTech or Computer Science, or completely ditch it and learn about biographies from credible platforms like YouTube and Coursera.
Conclusion.
While it is inevitable that AI is shutting the doors for many jobs, it may just as well create more jobs. It was predicted with the arrival of the Computer and IT sectors that they would "suck" all lower-level jobs (during the 90s and 20s era), but it only resulted in creating more jobs with the arrival of the IT sectors. Similarly, rather than completely eradicating the job market, Artificial Intelligence will create a new sector for people willing to work, adapt and those who passionately use the SPICE formula in their life.
The world is at the doorstep of change, an exciting moment of evolution. True that jobs like- clerks, cashiers, unproductive managers, delivery agents and non-sentimental jobs will get replaced, AI opens doors to sectors like AI developers, prompt engineers, data scientists, "AI administrators", and "Ethical hackers." These situations will surely reappear in the future- when fully automatic robots appear, when a technology defies the laws of physics and maths or when computers come to life, in a very distant but bright future, but as long as humans are persistent, willing to learn, human jobs will thrive better than ever.
